Pamela Burton & Company is an internationally recognized and respected landscape architecture firm that specializes in integrating the disciplines of art, architecture, and landscape. The Santa Monica based corporation employs twelve professional landscape architects and designers and offers comprehensive landscape design for civic, institutional, commercial, and residential clients.

The Pamela Burton & Company international portfolio includes work in Brazil, China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Mexico and Ukraine. The firm also has built work throughout the United States including California, Idaho, New York and Pennsylvania. The company combines Burton’s passion for plant materials and for the history of landscape architecture to create designs that evolve from a site’s cultural and physical environment. Each design is informed by a site’s geography, ecology, and history. Spatial organization is created by focusing on the movement of people through a place, how a series of spaces is connected, how objects and materials frame and form the proportions of a project. Aesthetic sensitivity is balanced by an interest in the symbolic nature of the built environment and a commitment to sustainable landscape design.

Recent projects reflecting the company’s interdisciplinary and critical approach to design include the Claire Trevor School of the Arts Plaza for the University of California, Irvine with Maya Lin; Colorado Center with Gensler Architects for Tishman Speyer Properties, Edison Language Academy with Daly Genik Architects; Jacobs Medical Center with Yazdani Studio/Cannon design; K&L Gates Plaza with LSM Architects, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Brazil Esplanade with Aflalo Gasperini Architects for Tishman Speyer Properties as well as many residential projects.

The company’s work has been featured in numerous publications including The New American Garden and Transforming the American Garden. In 2010, Princeton Architectural Press published a monograph of the firm’s work, Pamela Burton Landscapes. In 2003, Burton co-authored with Marie Botnick, Private Landscapes: Modernist Gardens in Southern California. The book profiles residential gardens designed by mid-century modernists Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and a number of their colleagues.

The company is certified as a City of Los Angeles DBE/WBE (Disadvantaged/Women Business Enterprise) by the California Unified Certifications Program (CUCP), and recognized by all U.S. DOT recipients in California.

Sustainable Design
A commitment to sustainable design including storm water management, heat island reduction, and water efficient landscaping is essential in our design process. Every project features innovative design solutions to the complex issues of building landscapes in their particular place. Our project for the Santa Monica Public Library with Moore Ruble Yudell, Architects received a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED™) Gold Rating and utilizes many sustainability features including rainwater harvesting for irrigation, a drought-tolerant planting palette, recycled materials in the hardscape, bio-swales to cleanse rainwater before releasing it into the ground, and a water efficient irrigation system.

Several members of Pamela Burton & Company are LEED professional, and we have designed many LEED™ certified projects. We are committed to the ongoing efforts in conservation and stewardship of the landscape. Our LEED registered projects include libraries, courthouses, civic centers, homes and offices throughout Southern California.
