VWA works on landscape, urban design, architectural projects and temporary installations. Exploring the intersection of these realms is important to our design process. We pursue invention, and although our work can be analysis driven, we ascribe to no predetermined design approach. Our studio relies upon the observation of historic and contemporary models of made landscapes so as to generate new ones.

Design practice at VWA occurs on a wide variety of scales, from a 50 x 50 cm concrete paver to a regional planning study covering 3’000km². The mental gymnastics of moving across these various scales between and within projects is vital to the work.
VWA works not from within each of our disciplines but across them. We approach both the macro-scale and the micro-scale simultaneously and with the same level of attention. Our conceptual process is one of both/and rather than either/or, we try to combine polarities rather than accept them as mutually exclusive: to draw inspiration from tradition but also to innovate, to learn from and strengthen natural systems but also acknowledge human intervention, to use an abstract yet figuratively resonant formal language, to create sober yet sensual environments.

To this end we propose a list of operations, a manifesto of sorts, that helps articulate our motivations and beliefs, that becomes embedded within our daily practice and that informs both our teaching as well as our continued learning.
